How Everton and Batman done my head in
This is just some words from the top of my head – I’m a man of images and not words so don’t expect any journalistic efforts!
Going back a few years, there was an Everton/DC Comics collaboration of sorts. Except it wasn’t a collaboration really. It was basically an outlet where you could get a Batman t-shirt but from an Everton store. Only one winner there and it wasn’t Everton – nothing new there before anyone else says it!
As usual, little to no imagination went into it. Collaborations are now a huge part of brand awareness in a time where one person sitting on his couch at home can get millions of views for a single video on TikTok with little to no followers, while huge blue chip companies spend millions on TV ads that nobody is interested in.
Which brings me back to Batman. With only a small bit of imagination, could Everton not have done more and made it more appealing?
With a quick slice across the top third of our badge it can be separated and made into a Batman logo of its own! A few tweaks and a bit of wording and you have multiple options to work with.
The potential to have done something more eye catching with a huge global brand and with the clubs identity as part of that has to be a wasted opportunity.
We’re moving to a stadium where Marvel amongst many others have shot plenty of film scenes down Regent Road and the dock warehouses which presents future opportunities and collaborations.
Some very quickly drafted cuts of the badge shape, show where the design could have been gone.
Likewise – we also did a Superman t-shirt. I’ve been meaning to do a post like this for around a year and before the unfortunate passing of Kevin Campbell. Was there not an opportunity to have collaborated on a ‘Super Kev’ design along the lines of the images below that I have put together?
There’s likely a lot of creative people working at the club so maybe it’s a case of giving them a bit more freedom. I don’t know the financial ins and outs of the deal when these t-shirts were available in store but it seems more a case of a huge missed opportunity in terms of brand value it could have brought rather than financial gain.
Work together, push them further, get some brand kickback from them and build partnerships. Not hang a few t-shirts in the store with a Batman and Superman logo on and a small bit of Everton on the sleeve. I don’t recall seeing one advert for them. DC Comics sit on archives of thousands (if not millions) of image assets and one of the worlds top comic book artists, Will Sliney is an Evertonian!
On the flip side, it could look awful and it’s all just in my head!
Just wanted that off my chest!
